Plot

In the film, "A Day Without a Mexican" (2004), a bizarre spectacle grips California as an impenetrable fog engulfs the state's borders, severing all communication beyond its confines. Amid this chaos, an even stranger phenomenon unfolds - every single Mexican disappears without a trace. The ripple of their absence is felt deeply as workers, spouses, and business owners vanish, leaving behind abandoned cars in the streets, food simmering on stoves, and a sense of profound unease. This inexplicable event thrusts the state into turmoil, bringing its economy to a standstill. Our narrative weaves through the lives of a musician's wife, a state Senator, and a farm owner, each grappling with the sudden disappearance of important people in their lives. The farm owner's produce lies ripe but unpicked, the Senator's home is neglected without his maid, and the musician's wife is left in a lonesome world without her partner's melodies. The plight even reaches the border guards who find themselves mourning their usual routine. Meanwhile, a scientist, desperate for answers, seeks any remaining Mexicans for genetic experiments. A female newscaster and the musician's daughter emerge as the only possible links to this enigma. But why them? And where have all the Mexicans gone? As the state grapples with the crippling consequences of their disappearance, the story unravels to reveal a world struggling to understand the importance of a community often overlooked. "A Day Without a Mexican" paints a vivid picture of a society in disarray, highlighting the indispensable role of the Mexican community in California's vibrant tapestry.
