Nowhere (1997)

In the pulsating heart of Los Angeles, a troupe of disaffected teenagers navigate a day and night steeped in strangeness and despair. "Nowhere" paints a vivid tableau of their lives, each one a labyrinth of alienation, failing relationships, and personal turmoil. At the core of this tangled web is Dark, a detached 18-year-old UCLA film student, and his eclectic tapestry of acquaintances. His girlfriend Mel, a bisexual African-American, finds comfort in the arms of her acid-tongued, purple-haired girlfriend Lucifer. Montgomery, Dark's homosexual classmate, shares a profound bond with Alyssa, a soulful poetess. Their world is populated with a spectrum of characters, ranging from Dark's friend, the queer industrial rock star Cowboy and his drug-addicted lover Bart, to the sharp-tongued Dingbat and her bulimic friend Egg. Each character is a planet in this cosmos of youth, spinning around the sun of a local drug dealer named Handjob, who lives with his S&M devotees, Kris and Kozzy, and a Teen Idol whose fame is so immense that his name remains unspoken. An ensemble of Atari gang members, chatty Valley girls, and intimidating drag queens add to the chaos, while a mysterious alien that only Dark can perceive lurks in the shadows. As they attempt to unravel the knots of their lives and emotions, they find themselves ensnared in bizarre experiences: alien abductions, harrowing acid trips, unexpected bisexual encounters, and alarming suicides. Amidst these bewildering events, they also confront unthinkable deaths and a horrific assault by a TV star. All these events crescendo towards "the greatest party of the year", an event that promises to be as unpredictable as the lives of these teenagers. In "Nowhere", reality is as elusive as a mirage, and the only certainty is uncertainty. This film is an exploration of youth in all its complexity, a journey through a landscape where the extraordinary is ordinary, and nothing is as it seems.
