Plot

Navigating the labyrinth of his childhood memories, young Owen takes us back to the Christmas of 1983, when he was merely a ten-year-old boy. His home, a battleground for his obsessively orderly mother and thrifty father, plays host to his two contrasting uncles - the verbose carpet magnate Huw, always at odds with his ex-wife, and the often befuddled Gorwel. Huw, with his taciturn son Maurice in tow, brings an array of malfunctioning computer games, while the meticulous mother inadvertently crushes the Subbuteo set. Fast-forward three years, and the irksome neighbours, the Cadwallander boys, continue to extort exorbitant prices for their Christmas carols. Huw's bitterness towards his ex-wife remains, but his gift of a faux Christmas tree triggers a chain of events leading to the return of their authentic tree. A game of Hungry Hippos sparks a dispute between the uncles, ending with Huw's artificial tree in cinders. By 1989, modernity seeps into their home with a telephone and a color television. Huw revels in his new achievement of fitting Tom Jones' carpet, while the Cadwallander boys celebrate their first CD. However, the festivities are marred as Gorwel's attempts to dismiss the boys end in a brawl. Amid the chaos, there's a silver lining as Gorwel's wager on a white Christmas pays off. But the joy is short-lived as a disastrous sledding incident injures the mother, leaving the men to salvage the Christmas dinner. Amid the turmoil, Maurice finally confronts his father, and the mother has a surprising revelation for Gorwel regarding his annual gifts.
