A Beautiful Place to Die: A Martha's Vineyard Mystery (2020)

Former Boston PD detective, Jeff Jackson, is compelled into early retirement due to a devastating injury sustained on a case that not only claimed his partner's life but also left a bullet dangerously nestled near his spinal cord. After the passing of his father, Jeff seeks solace in the tranquility of Martha's Vineyard, the island of his childhood summers, where he now resides in his father's house. His peaceful existence of fishing and tending to his father's boat is disrupted when he stumbles upon the lifeless body of Ray Norris, a young man he had noticed at the marina only a day before. With Martha's Vineyard Police Chief Madieras, a close friend of his late father, lacking experience in murder investigations, Jeff finds himself reluctantly drawn back into the world of crime-solving. Joining him on this case is Chief Madieras' daughter, Dr. Zee Madieras, Jeff's childhood friend and the island's acting M.E. The enigma of Ray's murder deepens as they unearth his connections to the island, particularly with a local charity, Harriet's Hope. The charity's Executive Director, Payton Bartel, along with board members Helena and Thomas Percy, had been in Ray's company during a recent gala fundraiser. Further intrigue arises with the discovery of Ray's association with Gerald Martin, an accountant linked to the charity, whose children, Bradley and Stacy Martin, were also seen with Ray. The charity is under IRS scrutiny for potential fraud, adding a layer of complexity to the investigation. Jeff and Zee's probe also brings them to Donovan Fletcher, the owner of the boat used by Ray, a man with a shady past in Boston. As they sift through the web of clues, the duo must grapple with the question of whether Jeff can endure the stress of a murder investigation, given his haunting nightmares about the case that nearly cost him his life.
