Vanessa Sills, a promising wordsmith who buried her novelist dreams to become a leading writer at Westside Lifestyle Magazine in Portland, finds herself at a crossroads. Urged by her best friend Amber, she embarks on a serene getaway to the tranquil Thompson Lake Inn, a charming bed and breakfast nestled in the heart of rural Washington. Unbeknownst to her, this retreat is about to steer her career and personal life in a new direction. While enjoying the solitude of the off-season, Vanessa's curiosity is piqued by a local enigma - celebrity mystery author Martin Clayborne. Once a high-profile figure, Martin vanished from the public eye five years ago, letting his successful novels communicate his narrative. Spotting a golden opportunity, Vanessa impulsively promises her Editor-in-Chief, Peter Roth, an exclusive interview with the reclusive author, a promise that could either earn her a promotion or cost her her job. As Vanessa doggedly pursues the interview, Martin remains elusive, seeing her as just another intrusive reporter. However, Vanessa's persistence begins to break down Martin's defenses, and he becomes intrigued by her sincere proposal to let him narrate his own story to his ardent fans.
