Riddled with Deceit: A Martha's Vineyard Mystery (2020)

In the serene retreat of Martha's Vineyard, retired Boston PD detective Jeff Jackson finds himself pulled into a web of intrigue and deception. Hired by his friend, Chief Madieras of Vineyard PD, for a one-time security gig at the Pendray Inn, Jeff’s laid-back retirement takes a thrilling turn. The Inn, managed by the vivacious Britt Prajna, a childhood friend and ally, becomes the stage for a grand event involving the infamous Lakshmi Emeralds, valued at a staggering $5 million. These emeralds, stolen from Britt's family six decades ago and lost in the shadowy corridors of the black market, have found their way back to their rightful owner, thanks to the sharp-eyed gemologist of Gaines and Associates Auction House in Boston. The safe return of the emeralds to Britt is orchestrated by her godfather, lawyer Willard Gilford, and Gaines, with the assistance of Thornbury Securities, led by Mike Vinson, a former Boston PD comrade of Jeff's. The island's glitterati gather at the Pendray Inn for the grand unveiling of the emeralds, with guests ranging from Rebecca Lane of the Vineyard Art Museum to AJ Sharma of Culture of India Magazine. Not all guests are welcome though, with Britt's cousin Lloyd contesting her ownership of the emeralds. Britt, however, plans to display the emeralds by wearing the broach for a week before donating them to the Smithsonian. But tranquility shatters when Britt is brutally attacked in her home and the emeralds are stolen from the inn's safe, echoing an earlier attempted theft. The case deepens when Zee, the island's acting M.E., and daughter of the Chief, is forced to investigate a murder related to the theft. With leads provided by Jackie Shawl, an investigative reporter, Jeff, Zee, and the Chief navigate a maze of suspects to unravel the mystery. As the stakes rise, Jeff realizes that this is no ordinary security gig, but a race against time to solve a crime that is riddled with deceit.
