Plot

A reinterpretation of the classic "12 Angry Men" (1957), "12" (2007) transplants the tense drama to a contemporary Russian school. Here, twelve jurors grapple with the daunting task of determining the future of a Chechen youth accused of murdering his Russian stepfather—a man who had offered him refuge in Moscow following the Chechen War that orphaned him. The jurors, a motley crew comprising a bigoted taxi driver, a distrustful doctor, an indecisive TV producer, a Holocaust survivor, a vivacious musician, a cemetery manager, and others, mirror the fragmented mosaic of today's Russian society. Adding a touch of New Age cinema, a solitary bird glides above the heads of the deliberating jurors, symbolizing elusive tolerance. A riveting narrative that probes deep into the human psyche and societal prejudices, "12" leaves viewers on the edge of their seats, questioning the very nature of justice.
