Plot

The Vatican's College of Cardinals makes an unthinkable and unfathomable decision to select a young American, Lenny Belardo, to be the next Pope. Installed as Pius XIII, the young Pontiff proves to be unpredictable and eccentric. He seems hellbent on upturning centuries of tradition for a billion Catholics worldwide. Pius XIII chooses a woman, Sister Mary, as his top advisor while paying short shrift to the powerful male-dominated elites of the church hierarchy. Initially thinking a youthful Pope could be controlled, the Cardinals now must grapple with an absolute ruler they can’t predict, discipline, regulate or manage.
