Plot

In the quaint, economically struggling town of Pelorus, New Zealand, Vancouverites Tom and Maggie Cabbott seek a fresh start, distancing themselves from the iron grip of Tom's wealthy and influential father, Frank Cabbott. They invest millions into establishing a salmon fishery, a potential lifeline for Pelorus, but their true intent is to escape the shadows of the Cabbott dynasty. Tom, having always felt like the overlooked, insignificant family member, dreams of a life away from the constant scrutiny and control. However, their tranquillity is shattered when Tom mysteriously vanishes during a solitary kayak trip on the sound. The investigation into his disappearance, and the search for his presumed body, is led by Pelorus' stalwart Chief of Police, Jack McGregor, whose family is deeply woven into the town's tight-knit fabric. News of Tom's disappearance reaches Vancouver, but instead of rushing to Pelorus, the Cabbotts dispatch their sharp and relentless forensic accountant, Esther Ishikawa. Her mission isn't to unravel the mystery of Tom's fate but to dig into the secrets Tom and Maggie might have buried, secrets that could potentially harm the Cabbott empire. As the search intensifies, unsettling truths about Tom surface, ripping open old wounds and revealing a tangled web of deception. What was once a sanctuary for the Cabbotts now becomes a cryptic labyrinth, where every discovery brings them closer to the haunting reality they were desperately trying to evade.
