Plot
This storyline is based on a book by Walter Tevis. An unremarkable nine-year-old girl is orphaned in the 1960s and becomes a quiet and sullen child. She is sent to an orphanage where the janitor teaches her to play chess. She seems to have a special talent for the game and soon becomes a prodigy. She enters many high-level competitions including the U.S. Open championship and becomes famous. Her fame only serves to make her lonelier and she begins to contemplate running away from it all. Will she be able to handle the massive attention from the public or will she opt for escape?
