In the shadowy dawn of World War II, Guy Crouchback, the scion of a fading English Roman Catholic dynasty, leaves the sun-kissed Italian shores to return to his homeland. Drawn into the thorny embrace of the Royal Corps of Halberdiers, he's surrounded by a charmingly eccentric band of comrades. The reunion is shadowed by Guy's disorienting exploits with Yugoslavian partisans and Virginia's tragic demise, alongside Guy's Uncle Peregrine, in a lethal doodlebug bomb attack. Finding solace in charitable work, Guy's life takes another turn as he ties the knot once more, marking the end of a tumultuous journey.
