Square Pegs (1982)

Welcome to the vibrant vortex of teenage life at Weemawee High School, a hub of cliques and social hierarchy. Here, fitting in is a rite of passage and standing out isn't always a virtue. This is the world that freshmen Patty Greene, a bright-eyed intellect hidden behind spectacles, and Lauren Hutchinson, a vivacious spirit carrying extra weight and donning braces, find themselves in. Despite their best efforts, they're like poppy flowers in a field of roses- alluring in their own right, but out of place nonetheless. As Patty and Lauren navigate this daunting social landscape, they find comradeship in fellow 'square pegs' - the constantly jesting Marshall Blechtman and the New Wave enthusiast, Johnny Ulasewicz, known better as Johnny Slash. Yet, the allure of the in-crowd proves irresistible. This elite circle spins around Jennifer DeNuccio, a girl whose heart beats to the rhythm of the Valley; LaDonna Fredericks, the trendiest African-American girl at Weemawee; Vinnie Pasetta, Jennifer's boyfriend who seems to have walked straight out of a Travolta movie; and Muffy Tepperman, a social butterfly fluttering from one school activity to another. As Patty and Lauren aspire to be part of the cool kids, they learn the ropes of high school, discovering that being a square peg isn't such a bad thing after all.
