In the tumultuous year of 1964, Singapore stands at the precipice of a new era. The colonial shackles of the British have been unfastened and the whispers of independence echo across the island. Amidst this backdrop of change and chaos, the narrative of Sam Callaghan, Patricia Cheng, and Kang unfolds. Sam Callaghan, an Australian by birth, is a man marred by his past. His childhood was a horror, spent interned in a POW camp by the Japanese during WWII, and his military career in the Malay Emergency was anything but ordinary. His ties with the world of military intelligence, although useful, repeatedly draw him back into the ominous shadows he yearns to escape from. When Patricia Cheng's husband, Winston, is killed on a case, she finds herself at the helm of the Cheng Detective Agency. Despite her lack of detective experience, Patricia is determined to keep the agency afloat and bring her husband's murderer to justice. Patricia's niece, Su Ling, along with Sam's business partner Kang, and a scrappy journalist named Bruce "Macca" MacDonald, form a motley crew of allies. In this tumultuous period, as MI-6, the CIA, and several rival gangs disrupt the political landscape, the Cheng Detective Agency's cases span from mundane infidelities and petty swindles to complex conspiracies with international ramifications. Sam's contacts from his military days prove invaluable, but they also lure him back into a world he'd rather forget. Serangoon Road is a crossroads where culture and crime, politics and patriotism, and espionage and enterprise converge.
