As World War III devastates the globe in 1999, an unexpected visitor descends from the cosmos, crashing upon the deserted Macross Island—an alien spacecraft. This unforeseen arrival ushers in a reluctant truce as humanity grapples with the evidence of an extraterrestrial menace that might return to recover its vessel. A global union is born, the United Nations Space Navy (UN Spacy), in response to this shared threat. On the day of SDF-1's grand launch, the Zentradi, a relentless alien force, descend upon Earth, resolved to retrieve their lost ship. As the terrestrial defenders rally against the alien invaders, the lives of those aboard the SDF-1 become entwined with the fate of the world. The crew and inhabitants of the ship are irrevocably altered as the war seeps into their personal lives, crafting a profound narrative of struggle and resilience. Simultaneously, the Zentradi are confronted with an unsettling revelation—their earthly foes closely resembling their own creators, the Protoculture.
