Plot

In the early 2000s, acclaimed author John Pearson (Paul Freeman) embarks on a journey to uncover the truth behind a mysterious tale that once shook the English elite. He interviews the aging John Burke (Sir Michael Gambon) and Susie Maxwell-Scott (Jane Lapotaire), focusing on the notorious Clermont Club, a Mayfair casino helmed by the relentless John Aspinall (Christopher Eccleston) three decades prior. At the heart of this tale is the ill-fated John Bingham, the 7th Earl of Lucan (Rory Kinnear), whose ironic nickname "Lucky" mirrors his perpetual losing streak. When Lucan's beleaguered wife Veronica (Catherine McCormack) raises her voice against his reckless gambling, her protest is met with brutality. Under Aspinall's sinister guidance, Lucan attempts to discredit Veronica's sanity to win their children's custody following their divorce. Veronica finds solace in the companionship of her nanny, Sandra Rivett (Leanne Best), but their tranquility is shattered when Lucan, led astray by Aspinall, infiltrates Veronica's house with lethal intent. In the enveloping darkness, he mistakenly kills Sandra, mistakenly thinking she's Veronica. Lucan's plan unravels as Veronica escapes his clutches, fleeing to a local pub from where she is taken to the hospital. As Lucan becomes a fugitive, Aspinall rallies the Clermont Club members, urging them to shield Lucan. But Dominic Elwes (Rupert Evans) refuses, choosing instead to publicise Veronica's side of the story and expose the club members' true nature. This act of defiance turns him into a social outcast, leading to his suicide. In the ensuing trial, Lucan, absent and on the run, is found guilty of murdering Sandra and attacking Veronica. Years later, a dying Susie Maxwell-Scott reveals to Pearson her belief that Aspinall helped Lucan escape to Switzerland, but may have also persuaded him to return to England, only to betray him to avoid further scandal. Veronica, however, believes Lucan committed suicide. Pearson is left with a chilling mystery and the haunting suspicion that the truth about Lucan lies at the bottom of the English Channel.
