Hopeless Pictures (2005)

In the wildly amusing world of Hopeless Pictures, an animated satire, we follow the trials and tribulations of Mel Wax (Michael McKean), the beleaguered head of a famously chaotic Hollywood independent studio. Named Hopeless Pictures in memory of his late parents, Hope and Les, Wax navigates the treacherous waters of an industry where a studio chief's reputation is only as solid as his most recent disaster. Wax is caught in a whirlwind of larger-than-life characters: pill-addicted Swedish directors gone rogue, stars inflated with self-importance, a soon-to-be ex-wife (Lisa Kudrow) hell-bent on revenge, a smorgasbord of romantic entanglements, and a nephew-cum-head of production (Bob Balaban) whose competence is questionable at best. Amidst this chaos, Wax must also deflect a looming hostile takeover and seek questionable guidance from a hapless psychiatrist, Dr. Stein (Jonathan Katz). Tying it all together is the studio's head of development, Tracy (Jennifer Coolidge), who also wears the hat of actress Nina Boroslova. As Wax attempts to keep his sinking ship afloat, Hopeless Pictures offers a laugh-out-loud journey through the labyrinthine madness of Hollywood's underbelly.
