Holliston (2012)

In the quaint, small-town atmosphere of Holliston, Massachusetts, the series unfolds the unconventional lives of two childhood friends, Adam and Joe, who are fervently chasing their dreams of becoming renowned horror movie filmmakers. Their journey, however, is not without hurdles as they navigate the maze of post-college life, working mundane jobs at a Boston area cable access station while hosting a late-night movie program, "The Movie Crypt." Their world is further enlivened by the presence of Laura, Joe's girlfriend - an aspiring artist with a delightful fascination for the morbid, and Corri, Adam's ex-girlfriend and the unforgettable heartbreak of his life, who is a stunning nurse with dreams of becoming a country singer. The series is also peppered with eccentric characters like their boss Lance Rockett, a 54-year-old glam metal aficionado who moonlights as the lead singer for a Van Halen tribute band, and Oderus Urungus, Adam's closet-residing, alien imaginary friend who offers misguided advice on his life. Holliston is an ingenious blend of comedy and horror, a twisted reinterpretation of the traditional sitcom, often likened to "Friends" for geeks or "The Big Bang Theory" meeting "Evil Dead 2". It brilliantly captures the comedy, the horror, and the heart of a time when the struggle to "make it" is just beginning, and when life refuses to follow the script they were told it would. Trapped in their small New England town, Adam and Joe’s misadventures with life, career, and the opposite sex create a tapestry of dreams, despair, and hilarity as they aspire to break into the big leagues.
