Plot

In the grimy underbelly of Victorian England, Susan "Sue" Trinder, a savvy fingersmith - street lingo for a thief - ekes out her living amidst the squalor and the unwanted infants cared for by the hardened Mrs. Sucksby. Their monotonous existence is disrupted when a down-on-his-luck gambler, once swimming in wealth, presents an audacious scam with a tantalizing reward of 40,000 pounds. The plot thickens around Maud Lilly, a wealthy orphan ensconced in the enigmatic Lilly house under the watchful gaze of her uncle. Sue, with her nimble fingers and cunning mind, is tasked with infiltrating the Lilly home, posing as Maud's unsuspecting maid. The scheme is for Sue to aid the gambler, Mr. Rivers, in gaining Maud's trust, leading to matrimony, only to condemn the innocent heiress to a madhouse, thus liberating her fortune for their taking. However, as the intricate web of deceit is woven, Sue finds herself ensnared in an unexpected emotional entanglement, her heart stolen by the very woman she is to swindle. As the stakes rise, and plans unravel in disastrous ways, the line between ally and adversary blurs. Amid the deceit and treachery, an overpowering question looms: In a world where trust is a luxury few can afford, who can you truly rely on? Each twist and turn in this gripping tale keeps you guessing, plunging you deeper into a labyrinth of love, betrayal, and unexpected alliances.
