In a whirlwind of past and present, Doctor Mateo Sancristobal's life takes an unexpected turn. Once a sought-after surgeon in the bustling city of New York, Mateo's life of prestige and wealth crumbles when a sudden onset of hemophobia (a dread of blood) triggers a career-ending nervous breakdown in the middle of surgery. His life now in shambles, Mateo leaves the ghosts of his past behind, seeking refuge in the serene town of San Martín del Sella in Asturias, Spain - a place brimming with childhood memories.
With reluctance, he accepts the role of town doctor, residing with his wise Aunt Juana who guides him through the simple ways of country living. As he acclimates to his new life, he befriends the amiable bartender Tom and the dependable cop Alfredo. Yet, this peaceful existence is stirred by the arrival of Adriana, a beautiful school teacher who captures Mateo's heart, and the eccentric neighbours such as Carol and Elena, Adriana's quirky friends, and Marga, Mateo's diligent secretary.
As he navigates this tight-knit community, he finds himself entangled in the personal dramas of its colorful denizens, including Mario, Ernesto, Bruno, Pedro, Lolo, Riqui, and Ana. Despite his initial reluctance, Mateo finds himself drawn into their lives, and thus, the heartbeat of San Martín del Sella begins to intertwine with his own. The once high-flying surgeon now finds himself in a world where the operation table is replaced by the kitchen table, and surgical precision gives way to heartfelt connection.
