Bread (1986)

In the pulsating heart of Liverpool, the Boswell family have mastered the art of navigating life's complexities without holding traditional employment. Despite their unconventional means of survival, they live comfortably, thanks in large part to government assistance and an array of under-the-table employments. The matriarch of the Boswell clan, Nellie, is a devout Catholic woman left to tend to her brood alone after her husband's departure for "a tart". She finds an unlikely ally in her eldest son, Joey, who steps into the paternal void for his siblings - the resourceful Jack, thoughtful Adrian, spirited Billy, and radiant Aveline. The Boswells' relentless ability to drain the DHSS, coupled with the boys' side hustles, has become the stuff of local legend. However, beneath the family's united front, individual discontent simmer beneath the surface, proving that even the most skilled survivors aren't immune to the tribulations of life.
