Plot

Beyond the Realm of Conscience (2009) is a compelling exploration of the lives of two starkly contrasting women in the heart of the palace. Charmaine Sheh breathes life into the character of Lau Sam Ho, embodying the teachings imparted by her late mother: to act kindly, speak gracefully and exude good intentions. She navigates the labyrinth of palace life with a heart full of compassion, radiating benevolence amidst the intrigue. Tavia Yeung's character, Yiu Kam Ling, however, uses cunning and manipulation as her tools for survival. She shrewdly claws her way to the top, securing her position as the emperor's concubine through a web of deceit. Her paths cross with Sam Ho's when she notices the latter's affections towards the emperor, Lee Yi, portrayed by Moses Chan, and the chess master, Ko Hin Yeung, played by Kevin Cheng. Brimming with jealousy and fearing the loss of her power, Kam Ling resorts to harsh tactics. She pins a false accusation of murder on the innocent Sam Ho, leading to a death sentence. But even the best-laid plans can go awry, and Kam Ling learns this as her scheming does not quite unfold as she had intended. This captivating series takes the viewer on a gripping journey of palace politics, love, jealousy, and the power of virtue over deception.
