Plot
In the future, humanity has found an unconventional path to immortality. Through the use of cortical stacks, consciousness can be digitized and implanted in the spine. That allows those with the money and the influence to have their memories placed in a new body. Laurens Bancroft has just had his body killed, and he wants to know why. To that end, he's enlisted the help of Takeshi Kovacs: a legendary soldier from 250 years prior who finds himself awoken in a future he tried to prevent. But solving the murder comes with the reward of a new lease on life.
