Plot

In the wake of their first triumphant Schleswig War, the heart of Denmark pulsates with pride and ambition. The nation's leaders, intoxicated with victory, dream of folding Schleswig into the Danish Kingdom, openly defying the terms of peace. Amidst this political turbulence, in a quaint Danish hamlet, the lives of two brothers, Peter (Jens Sætter-Lassen) and Laust (Jakob Oftebro), intertwine with that of Inge (Marie Tourell Søderberg), the woman they both love. As the Danish Minister President, Mr. Monrad (Nicolas Bro), brazenly calls for Schleswig's absorption into the Kingdom, the ominous drumbeats of the 2nd Schleswig War reverberate throughout the land. Yet, this time, the Danish forces find themselves staring down the barrel of Otto von Bismarck's (Rainer Bock) formidable Prussian and Austrian army, an adversary far superior in strength and size. A century and a half later, on the brink of an emotional collapse, the troubled teenager Claudia (Sarah-Sofie Boussnina) is reluctantly drawn into the orbit of the elderly Baron, Severin (Bent Mejding). Inge's ancient diary, discovered by Claudia, unveils the chilling reality of the Battle at Dybbøl, 1864, where legions of young Danes met their fate in a war that was both futile and confounding. 1864 paints an intense portrait of a monumental moment in Danish history, a time of blossoming patriotism tinged with the bitter taste of defeat. It's a tale of love and innocence, set against a backdrop of ignorance and recklessness, echoing through the ages.
