Plot
Tom Kirkman is the United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. On the day of the State of the Union, Kirkman is the "Designated Survivor," meaning he is kept out of the Capitol Building to serve as President in the event that a terrorist attack destroys the building.
That is exactly what happens, and Kirkman becomes President. The series tracks Kirkman's experiences as President, a role he must serve under the most stressful possible circumstances. Kirkman must rebuild the country's government, face down a series of threats, and protect his family from the stress of his new role.
