Plot

Nestled in the heart of Kosovo, where ancient folklore whispers of mystical beings known as Zanas residing in the mountains and bathing in freshwater streams, we find the story of Lume (Adriana Matoshi). An Albanian woman living in a Kosovar village, Lume is caught in a world that seems to balance precariously on the edge of the ethereal and the real. Alongside her husband Ilir (Astrit Kabashi) and mother-in-law Remzije (Fatmire Sahiti), Lume walks a path haunted by a decade-old loss of her only child to the war, a ghostly presence that cloaks her nights in terror and leaves her barren. Lume's family, desperate to fill the gaping void left by their lost child, insists on her consulting the magical healers of their land, hoping to cure her infertility. The pressure mounts as Remzije introduces a young, prospective wife into their home, threatening to replace Lume. Caught in a storm of desperation and fear, Lume surrenders to the call of traditional practices, abandoning the path of modern medicine. But as Lume steps into the world of mystical healers and ancient rituals, the brutal realities of her past and the legacy of wartime violence return to haunt her. Her sleepwalking encounters with a feared witch doctor prompt extreme measures from Remzije to shield the potential offspring from lurking evils. Zana is a vivid exploration of a woman's struggle to reconcile the expectations of motherhood with a past scarred by brutality, all within a society that is a complex tapestry of tradition, folklore, and the aftermath of war. It offers a compelling journey into the heart of a woman battling her haunting past, while navigating the pressures of a culture steeped in ancient lore and modern conflict.
