Plot

In the heart of a bustling New York City, nineteen-year-old Bernard Chanticleer finds himself entangled in an intricate web of parental control, romantic longing, and a desperate yearning for independence. Having lived a life of extreme shelter under the wings of his wealthy yet overbearing parents, Bernard's world is turned upside down when his domineering librarian father, I.H. Chanticleer, with a simple declaration of "Grow up," decides it's time for his son to be a "big boy" and live on his own. Yet, even as he steps into the world, Bernard remains ensnared in his mother's protective grasp. Margery Chanticleer, a woman so doting that she mails her son locks of her own hair, sets him up in an apartment run by Miss Nora Thing, an acquaintance tasked with keeping an eye on Bernard's every move. This freedom, albeit limited, is a bewildering maze for the inexperienced Bernard, especially when it comes to navigating the enigmatic domain of the opposite sex. Aided by his more worldly work colleague, Raef del Grado, Bernard embarks on a quest of self-discovery and romantic pursuit. His eyes are fixed on the tantalizing and inscrutable go-go dancer, Barbara Darling, an object of infatuation so potent that he barely notices his devoted coworker, Amy Partlett, who silently pines for him beneath the shadow of his dreams. However, Bernard's path to his dream girl is riddled with unforeseen obstacles. From a malicious rooster patrolling his rooming house halls, trained to attack beautiful women, to Barbara herself, a woman scarred by the lecherous advances of a wooden-legged hypnotherapist from her past, Bernard is plunged into an improbable universe brimming with calculated clumsiness and confounding hurdles. "You're a Big Boy Now" is an engaging exploration of a young man's tumultuous journey from sheltered boyhood to the chaotic precipice of adulthood, offering a captivating peek into a world marked by parental control, unrequited love, and the bewildering labyrinth of coming-of-age.
