Plot

In the vibrant, gritty streets of New York City, we find J.R., an Italian-American lad "between jobs," who finds solace in the company of his close-knit group of friends and the occasional carousing. Raised in the grip of stringent Catholic beliefs, he clings to these values as his guiding compass. However, his world takes a turn when he crosses paths with a captivating young woman on the Staten Island Ferry, a woman who rides the ferry simply to fill her time. J.R.'s friends can sense the shift in his focus, a disturbance stirred by this newfound affection, and they're not too keen about it. As J.R. falls deeply in love with this enigmatic woman, he grapples with his traditional views on purity and marriage. He yearns for her, yet he resolves to withhold physical intimacy until they are wed, believing only virgins to be potential wives, while degrading those who don't fit his mold as mere "broads". However, the woman he loves reveals a dark secret from her past, an incident beyond her control. This revelation tests their relationship to its core. J.R.'s struggle to reconcile his love for her with his deep-seated Catholic guilt and preconceived notions about female chastity brings his world crashing down. The question that lingers is whether love can triumph over their hardships, allowing them to forge a truly committed relationship that they both desire, or if J.R.'s religious guilt will continue to haunt him. "Who's That Knocking at My Door" is a stirring exploration of love, faith, and the devastating effects of guilt, offering a poignant look at how one man's beliefs can become his undoing.
