Plot

In the monochromatic heartland of Iowa, Flip, a white teenager, is consumed by dreams of embracing the vibrant world of hip-hop stardom, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre. Armed with a mirror and the company of his friends, James and Trevor, Flip immerses himself in Black culture, donning its attire, and speaking its slang, all in a quest to 'keep it real.' This fantasy extends to his role as a faux drug dealer, peddling flour as cocaine. However, his romanticized vision of urban life blurs his perception of the harsh realities encroaching upon his life: his father's joblessness, his mother's reliance on food stamps, his girlfriend's unexpected pregnancy, and James's potential mental instability. Among all this, one of his friends, one of the town's few Black kids, is gearing up for college. A stark contrast to Flip's lifestyle, this friend is on a path to genuine success. The bubble of Flip's fantasies is threatened when a trip to Chicago to buy real drugs ends in a police shootout with actual bullets. Now, Flip is faced with a pressing question: When will he realize that his version of 'keeping it real' is far removed from true reality?
