Plot

In the heart of Spain, Salamanca, on July 18, 1936, the Spanish army declares a state of war. They aim to spread this conflict across the country, a desperate bid to stabilize the uncertainty brought about by the proclamation of the Second Republic five years prior. Miguel de Unamuno, an aging writer, distinguished academic, and esteemed intellectual, finds himself disillusioned with the Republic he once supported. He throws his backing behind the revolt, hoping to purge the nation of its undesirable elements, much to the despair of his close friends, teacher Salvador and priest Atilano. This decision brings a wave of turmoil crashing into his home, where he resides with his daughters María and Felisa, his housemaid Aurelia, and his grandson, Miguelín. As chaos unfolds, Salamanca's mayor, Casto Prieto, is wrongfully arrested, and his wife Ana turns to Unamuno for assistance. Meanwhile, the Joint Chiefs of Staff convene to strategize their bid for power. The ruthless General Astray-Millán, a one-eyed, one-armed, one-legged man who is General Franco's right hand, suggests making Franco the leader, despite resistance from General Cabanellas, who fears Franco would extinguish the Republic he cherishes and replace it with a dictatorship. When Atilano mysteriously vanishes, his wife Enriqueta informs Unamuno of his arrest, while Salvador attempts to alert him to the true intentions of the military revolution: the transformation of Spain into a fascist state. Initially unwilling to believe it, Unamuno is confronted with the harsh reality when Salvador is arrested right before his eyes. Filled with regret and sorrow, he questions his stance on the revolution and requests to meet Franco, who has been named Chief of Staff of the Spanish Army with full political and military powers after the Battle of Alcázar de Toledo. Unamuno becomes a firsthand witness to the seismic events that would forever alter the course of Spain's history.
