Plot

Embracing both adventure and sentimentality, Where the Red Fern Grows tells an enchanting tale of a young boy's unyielding pursuit for his own red-bone hound hunting dogs. Set against the rustic backdrop of the Ozark Mountains during the harsh times of the Great Depression, we follow Billy Coleman, a hardworking lad, who diligently saves his earnings over two years to fulfill his dream of owning two coonhound pups. Leaning into a newfound faith in God, Billy navigates a world filled with incredible challenges and heartrending losses, traversing the fertile river valleys of Cherokee country alongside his faithful companions, "Old Dan" and "Little Ann." This film captures the indomitable spirit of this trio, who tirelessly roam the Ozarks, their sights set on treing the elusive "Ghost" raccoon. Their determination and courage are rewarded when they clinch the prestigious gold cup in the yearly coon-hunt contest, outsmart tricky ghost coons, and even valiantly defend against a mountain lion. Through these trials and adventures, Billy uncovers profound lessons about true friendship, unwavering loyalty, noble integrity, and understated heroism, making Where the Red Fern Grows a timeless and deeply touching narrative of coming of age.
