In the picturesque landscapes of France, Lucienne Delamare and Pierre Maury find solace in a secret love affair, away from their mundane lives. Lucienne's husband, Paul, serves as the charismatic mayor and a French deputy, his allure lost in the constant absence due to his political commitments. Pierre, a man stuck in a stagnant marriage with his frail and ailing wife, Clotilde, ascends to the stature of vice-mayor, courtesy of Paul's influence.
Their clandestine rendezvous by the serene lake along a quaint country lane forms the crux of their forbidden romance. But when the town is abuzz with whispers of Clotilde's sudden death, presumably by suicide, Pierre unveils a shocking truth to Lucienne.
The plot thickens as Paul, oblivious to his wife's infidelity, proposes a dubious land deal promising prosperity for their town. He seeks Pierre's political alliance, unknowing of the betrayal lurking in the shadows.
