Plot

Escaping the suffocating hold of his overbearing father's farm in the quaint hamlet of Grumbach, Jake Grier seeks refuge in the bustling city of Chicago, yearning to find success as a painter. However, when his wife Ellen is stripped of her city teaching job, and a chance at another at their alumni high-school evaporates, they're left with no choice but to return to their roots. This reluctant homecoming is met with disdain from their children - the young and impressionable Bert, terrorized by his stern grandfather, and the rebellious teenager Amy. Jake's life becomes a maelstrom as his father, Fritz, continues to belittle him, still venerating the memory of Jake's late brother Mitch, whose life was tragically cut short in a car accident. As the shadows of a somber past begin to creep back into their lives, Jake's marriage teeters on the brink of collapse. Despite their familial commitments, both Jake and Ellen find themselves irresistibly drawn towards old flames from their past, with Ellen rekindling a dangerous attraction for the town's sheriff, Tom Welton.
