Plot

In the heart of summer, on July 22, 2011, a chilling echo of terror reverberates through the tranquillity of Norway. Only two hours post igniting a lethal car-bomb, claiming eight lives in Oslo, the remorseless far-right terrorist, Anders Behring Breivik, embarks ominously on the ferry MS Thorbjørn across Lake Tyri. Unbeknownst to the youthful spirits attending the Workers' Youth League summer camp on the secluded island of Utøya, their world is about to shatter with the horrific resonance of the Oslo atrocity. As the first gunshots rip through the air, a dread-laden realization descends: death is no longer a stranger on their idyllic island. In this harrowing landscape, eighteen-year-old Kaja grapples with the dual torment of survival and the desperate search for her younger sister, Emilie. Alongside approximately six-hundred unsuspecting participants, they are swept into a whirlwind of ruthless destruction as Breivik, with chilling precision, weaves a lethal tapestry of despair. The next seventy minutes unfurl like an endless nightmare, as hundreds are injured and sixty-nine lives, full of youthful promise, are brutally extinguished. Utøya: July 22 (2018) paints an unnerving tableau of this horrifying event, etching the memory of the Utøya massacre onto the canvas of history. Will the world ever erase the scars of July 22, 2011, from its collective consciousness? This film seeks not to answer, but to remember, making it an unmissable journey through one of the darkest chapters in Norwegian history.
