Plot

As the summer of 1972 blazes with the heat of Vietnam war protests and racial tension in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, the story of Billy Mitchell unfolds. A freshly minted college graduate, Billy, portrayed by Devon Bostick of Diary of a Wimpy Kid fame, finds himself in the midst of an unexpected journey while working on the verdant grounds of a time-worn mental institution managed by his psychiatrist father (Tate Donovan, Argo). Billy's world takes a dramatic turn when he falls for Virginia, a captivating inmate played by Natalia Dyer of Velvet Buzzsaw and Stranger Things. Virginia is an enigma—a paradox of sanity and madness that leaves Billy questioning whether she is indeed a victim of mental instability or the sole beacon of sanity in his increasingly chaotic world. Meanwhile, Billy's best friend, Nigel (Marchant Davis), engages with a radical civil rights movement, a form of civil terrorism aimed at the power elite of Tuscaloosa—a group that shockingly includes Billy's own father. This clash of worlds leaves Billy in a whirlwind of confusion and conflict, torn between loyalty to his father, his blossoming love for Virginia, and the radical cause championed by Nigel. With Virginia planning her escape, Billy finds himself on the precipice of high society, caught between love, loyalty, and revolution. Will he choose the comfort of the familiar or embrace the uncertainty of a world beyond the institution's walls? The vibrant tapestry of Tuscaloosa deftly weaves the rawness of 1970's America with the complexity of interpersonal relationships, inviting viewers to experience an evocative portrayal of love, rebellion, and the quest for freedom.
