Session 9 (2001)

In the eerie confines of the long-abandoned Danvers State Hospital, a former asylum shuttered since 1985, a small asbestos abatement team led by Gordon Fleming embarks on a week-long project. Gordon, a new father grappling with familial anxieties, is desperate for work, and so he accepts this daunting task. To meet the tight schedule, he rallies his business partner Phil and additional workers, Hank, Mike, and Jeff, each wrestling with their own personal turmoil. Hank, the love-thief, is resented by Phil for stealing his girlfriend. Mike, a law school dropout, seeks solace in his intellectual pursuits, while Jeff is haunted by a crippling fear of the dark. Their personal histories and frictions add layers of tension to the already oppressive atmosphere of the derelict institution. The job, initially straightforward but rushed, spirals into complexity when Mike stumbles upon a sealed box marked "Evidence." Inside, he discovers nine audio tapes, the recorded therapy sessions of a former patient, Mary Hobbes. Mary, a host to multiple personalities - The Princess, Billy, and the elusive Simon - becomes an enigma that Mike is drawn to unravel. As he delves deeper into the tapes, Simon's ominous absence becomes increasingly unsettling, until his malevolent nature is revealed in the chilling Session 9. Simultaneously, Hank unearths a cache of ancient silver coins, a find that leads to his inexplicable disappearance. As the crew grapples with their internal demons and the unsettling mysteries within the asylum's decaying walls, the line between reality and hallucination begins to blur. The once straightforward job becomes a labyrinth of fear and paranoia, a psychological puzzle box where each finding leads to more questions, and each session brings them closer to the terrifying truth.
