Plot

In the twilight of the 1970s, we meet James Powers, a 16-year-old American, disoriented and adrift on the verdant shores of Ireland. Following the death of his mother, he is thrust into a new life under the stern guardianship of his three Irish aunts. Displaced, despondent and yearning for his old life in America, James feels like a puzzle piece lost in the wrong box. Amidst the rolling emerald hills and the austere customs of his aunts, James stumbles upon an unexpected opportunity during a fortuitous weekend in London. He discovers the tempting world of pornography — a discovery that quickly morphs into a lucrative business venture. Consumed by his desperation for cash and a ticket back home, he ventures into the murky black market, selling these forbidden magazines back in Ireland. His clandestine enterprise takes off, spreading like a wild summer gorse fire across the Irish countryside. As his pockets swell, he finds himself grappling with an unexpected dilemma — the definition of home. Is it the land of his birth or the land that has tested him, shaped him, and offered him a chance to carve out his own identity? "Turning Green" is a poignant exploration of adolescence, loss, and the transformative power of choice. As James stands on the precipice of adulthood, he must determine where his heart truly belongs and understand that our place in the world is often a profound state of mind.
