In the small town of Rawlings, Idaho, Kristin Scott bravely dons her firefighting gear, stepping onto the smoky battlefield that is her legacy. Following the path of her revered father, Captain Hank Scott, she becomes a part of the Fire Department. However, despite being mentored by her esteemed father, she finds herself facing a challenging inferno of gender bias. As the only woman in the department, she endures the scorching heat of resentment and unfair treatment, particularly from Trip Crandall, the successor to Hank's role.
In a tragic turn of events, Hank's final call, a raging house fire, becomes his swansong. Kristin, despite saving a child amidst the chaos, is met with accusatory stares and whispers, blamed for her father's death because she was with him in the fire. The smokescreen of accusations leaves her on a two-week administrative leave and an additional six-week suspension after an incident with Trip.
Determined to prove her mettle in this male-dominated profession, Kristin seizes her downtime as an opportunity. She sets her sights on becoming a smoke jumper, the elite, risk-laden tier of her profession. A task even Trip couldn't accomplish. This decision plunges her into an arduous training regimen, a baptism by fire where she must prove herself or perish.
As she navigates through the grueling training, she encounters further resistance, notably from Ray Kulhanek, a fellow smoke jumper, who is paradoxically drawn to her. Kristin finds herself in a battle against a system steeped in prejudice and discrimination. As she confronts life-threatening situations, she needs to outshine the rest, not just to save others but also to ensure her survival. The flames of adversity rise, threatening to consume her nascent career. Kristin must rise from the ashes to validate her place in the world of firefighting or risk being extinguished forever.
