Plot

Trade (2019) paints a vivid portrait of an unlikely convergence of two disparate lives, each concealing a secret identity beneath the surface of societal expectations. Michael, a highly admired corporate attorney, leads a life of success and respectability. Beneath his well-tailored suits, however, lies a deep-seated desire to break free from the trappings of his masculinity and embrace his true feminine self. He navigates this clandestine life with caution, balancing the expectations of his loving wife, who yearns to start a family, with his own hidden yearnings. In stark contrast, we meet Shawn, a charismatic and resilient hustler, who walks the night-clad streets as Coco, an enchanting woman of the night. The darkness of his past has led him to a life on the fringes, yet his spirit remains undeterred. He's an African-American man who proudly defines himself as gay, despite the challenges he has faced, including a stint in prison for a crime he didn't commit. When the paths of Michael and Shawn cross, an unexpected bond forms, a bond that challenges their perceptions of self-identity and authenticity. Shawn, intrigued by Michael's struggle, encourages him to step into the light and become the woman he truly identifies as. As their relationship deepens, they both confront their realities, shedding the masks they've been hiding behind. Trade (2019) is a compelling exploration of identity, authenticity, and acceptance, set against the backdrop of two starkly different worlds colliding. The narrative illuminates the human capacity for self-discovery, shedding light on the extraordinary journeys we undertake to truly embrace who we are.
