Touch of Evil (1958)

Just as they straddle the precipice of a shared life, newlywed couple, Mike Vargas, an esteemed Mexican narcotics officer, and Susie Vargas, an American citizen, find their honeymoon abruptly cut short. The detonation of a bomb in a car they had just passed on their cross-border trip from Mexico to the US, extinguishes the life of a local American businessman, Rudy Linnekar, and his anonymous female passenger. The reverberations of this explosion ripple through the narrative, tugging the couple into a vortex of crime, corruption, and danger. Borne on the wings of duty, Mike plunges into the murky waters of the investigation, prompted by the cross-border implications of the case. As he dives deeper, he is thrown into a cat-and-mouse game with Hank Quinlan, the town's hard-bitten, gimp-legged police captain. Quinlan, a man as well-known for his successful track record in nabbing criminals as he is for his alcoholism, navigates the labyrinthine trails of crime using his gut instincts, a talent that has cemented his reputation in law enforcement. The investigation's spotlight falls on Manolo Sanchez, a Mexican national clandestinely linked to Linnekar's daughter.
