Tony Manero (2008)

In the heart of Santiago, amidst dilapidated houses, lives Raúl, an unemployed man of middle age, who bears an uncanny obsession for John Travolta's character, Tony Manero, from the iconic film "Saturday Night Fever". His life's mission orbits around the pursuit of mastering every nuance of Manero, striving to encapsulate the perfect impersonation himself. Raúl finds refuge in a ramshackle abode overseen by landlady Wilma, who has transformed a spacious room into a simple stage. Here, Raúl, along with other tenants, indulges in rehearsals of a show, a tribute to Manero's style. Among the performers are Goyo and Pauli, young souls clandestinely opposing the oppressive Pinochet regime. The plot thickens as Raúl witnesses the brutal shooting of a man by the secret police, a man who had just received political flyers from Goyo. Driven by a strange compulsion, Raúl returns to the lifeless body and steals the man's wristwatch, which he exchanges with a junk dealer for thick glass bricks. These bricks, integral to his performance, would light up the stage from beneath, mirroring the film that fuels his obsession. However, Raúl's quest for perfection takes a macabre turn when he murders the junk dealer to amass more bricks. Donning his new Tony Manero styled attire, Raúl navigates a path fraught with danger towards a look-alike contest at TV Chile. As the secret police storm his residence to arrest Pauli and other political suspects, Raúl manages to evade capture, escaping over the rooftop and continuing his journey to the TV studio.
