Emerging from the cold bars of prison after serving an arduous eighteen-year sentence for a murder committed in a youthful rage, Bill Clark finds himself in an unrecognizable world. Once a boy of thirteen, imprisoned for protecting himself against his abusive father, Bill grapples with the realities of adulthood that have been denied to him for so long—drinks, girls, and the bitter taste of freedom. Yearning for a life of tranquility, Bill tries to dissolve into the anonymity of his home town, Norton City, using his welding skills honed in prison.
