Plot

In the shadow of the timeless Malian city of Timbuktu, Kidane (Ibrahim Ahmed aka Pino), a dignified cattle herder, coexists harmoniously with the expansive dunes. He shares his oasis of tranquillity with his wife Satima (Toulou Kiki), his daughter Toya (Layla Walet Mohamed), and their young shepherd, Issan (Mehdi Ag Mohamed). Their lives, though humble, are a testament to the enduring spirit of the human will, undisturbed by the oppressive reign of Jihadists intent on controlling their faith. However, within the city's ancient walls, a starkly contrasting reality unfolds. The locals, trapped in a regime of terror, are stripped of their simple joys: music, laughter, cigarettes, even the unifying spirit of soccer have been outlawed. Women, relegated to shadows in their own homes, continue to resist, their dignity defiant against the absurdity and tragedy of the improvised courts issuing daily decrees. In this harsh world where faith and freedom clash, Kidane and his family have remained untouched by the chaos that has overtaken Timbuktu. But the sands of their lives are about to shift abruptly, their peaceful existence threatened by a destiny they could not foresee. As tension mounts, the tranquillity of the dunes will be tested, thrusting Kidane's family into the heart of Timbuktu's struggle.
