In the rustic expanse of the American west, a man dubbed Thunderbolt (Clint Eastwood) has been living a double life, his middle-aged guise of a preacher concealing his notorious past. His peaceful masquerade, however, is disrupted when a familiar face from his past stumbles upon him. A fortunate encounter with a sprightly young man, nicknamed Lightfoot (Jeff Bridges), provides Thunderbolt with an unexpected escape.
