Plot

In the dusty expanse of small-town Texas, we meet Jim Arnaud, a police officer whose earnest efforts to do right often lead him down the wrong path. His life, riddled with imperfections, is a testament to his impulsive nature and fiery temper, often leading him to stray from his plans and breach social conventions. His relationship with his mother, a dancer and dance teacher, was strained and complex, mirroring the discord with his two siblings. Separated from his wife, Ros, for a year, his contact with their nine-year-old daughter Crystal is confined to weekends – a situation that tugs at his heartstrings. His fellow officers tolerate him, with his married partner, Nate Lewis, serving as his only ally in the force. As Jim grapples with his less than ideal life, two seismic events threaten to shatter his fragile world. The first is the passing of his mother. Despite their complicated relationship, he desires to honor her memory, spurring his determination to build a better bond with Crystal, the kind he never had with his mother. The second is his wife Ros' decision to not only file for divorce but also petition for full custody of Crystal, planning to start anew with her boyfriend Chris in a different town. In the face of these trials, Jim’s life teeters precariously on the edge of collapse. With his world spiralling, he will be tested as he fights to preserve what little he holds dear. The narrative of Thunder Road is a poignant exploration of a man navigating the rocky terrains of life, parenthood and loss.
