At the turn of the century, a greedy, ruthless and ambitious silver miner named Daniel Plainview strikes oil and sets about building an empire. He adopts the orphan boy of an employee killed on the job and makes the acquaintance of Eli Sunday, a preacher who demands a donation to his church in order to buy the rights to his family's oil-rich property. Over the years, the two remain connected, often in opposition as they climb the ladder in their respective worlds of industry and religion. As Plainview grows richer and more powerful, his alienation from everyone increases as well.
