Plot

Born into a world of wealth and privilege, Kate Croy (Helena Bonham Carter) witnesses her mother relinquish their luxurious life to marry her penniless, opium-addicted father (Sir Michael Gambon), a man unashamed to admit his theft from his wife. Orphaned and impoverished after her mother's demise, Kate is offered a glimmering chance to reclaim the life of affluence her mother once abandoned. The price for this golden opportunity is steep: she must sever ties not only with her destitute father but also with her beloved, the fiery journalist Merton Densher (Linus Roache), to whom she has promised marriage. Reluctantly, Kate agrees and soon finds herself entangled in a delicate friendship with Milly Theale (Alison Elliot), an American heiress known as "the world's richest orphan" embarking on the Grand Tour. When Merton, desperate for a glimpse of Kate, unexpectedly crashes a party attended by both women, he unwittingly ignites a spark of attraction in Milly's heart. The twist in this intricate tapestry comes when Kate discovers Milly's terminal illness. With a blend of cunning and desperation, she hatches a daring plan. If successful, she could secure the wealth she covets without losing the love she cherishes. But as her scheme unfurls, not everything goes according to plan. Kate's quest for having it all spirals into a captivating tale of love, deception, and the true cost of ambition.
