Plot

In the heart of the Dalmatian coast of Italy, Squarciò, a rugged fisherman, ekes out a life on a secluded island with his family. He is a man caught in the relentless grip of harsh existence, wrestling with the scarcity of fish in local waters and the iron fist of the neighborhood wholesaler. Unlike his fellow islanders, who patiently cast their nets hoping for a bountiful catch, Squarciò, driven by desperation, dares to venture into the open sea, indulging in the forbidden act of bomb-fishing. His audacious choices lead him down a treacherous path. Squarciò finds himself enmeshed in a web of debt, losing his trusted boat, and facing an unthinkable choice. In an act of utter despair, he is forced to unleash his explosives near the shores, triggering waves of disdain and ostracism from his fellow fishermen. Unwavering in his resolve to secure a future for his family, Squarciò, alongside his young sons, bravely sets sail once more, venturing further than before, and resorting again to his controversial fishing methods. But the unforgiving sea is a cruel mistress, and this time, it demands a devastating price...
