In the quiet months preceding the storm of World War I, from July 1913, an eerily serene German village is disrupted by a chain of unsettling incidents. A horse stumbles over a hidden wire, unseating its unsuspecting rider; a woman tumbles to her demise through decayed floorboards; the local baron's son is found suspended upside down in an old mill. Beneath the village's placid surface, parents unleash their frustrations on their children, a man torments his enduring lover, and another darkens his soul with unspeakable acts against his own daughter. Individuals begin to vanish, leaving behind an unsettling void. In the midst of this turmoil, a naive schoolteacher, who is tenderly courting a nanny from the baron's household, takes it upon himself to connect the dots between these horrifying events and the increasingly disturbed world around him. He serves as our guide, narrating this tale of a community spiraling out of control. As he delves deeper into the mystery, shadows of foreshadowing loom larger, raising questions about the innocence of the village's children and the presence of divine justice. While God may indeed be in His heaven, there's an undeniable sense that things in this once-idyllic village are far from right. As the center begins to crumble, the village teeters on the edge of chaos.
