Plot

In the throbbing heart of World War II London, a seasoned American nurse, Lady Susan Ashwood (Irene Dunne), finds herself in the nerve-wracking confines of a hospital, her heart pounding with the dread of her son, Sir John Ashwood II (Peter Lawford), appearing among the wounded soldiers. As she stands on the precipice of despair, her mind drifts back to the days of World War I, when her husband, the gallant Sir John Ashwood (Alan Marshal), was on the battlefield, leaving her in a ceaseless vigil of anticipation. Hailing from modest beginnings, Susan's life takes a fascinating turn when she accompanies her father, Hiram Porter Dunn (Frank Morgan), the publisher of a humble daily newspaper, to London for a two-week vacation in the spring of 1914. The trip, initially marred by disappointments, culminates in an unexpected invitation to the King's ball on her last day. It is here that she crosses paths with the charming Sir John, who was meant to accompany another woman that evening. Their shared attraction is instant, yet Susan, brimming with patriotism, hesitates to abandon her American roots and plunge into the world of British aristocracy with its daunting customs and traditions. She recalls the poignant moment, a decade earlier, when her father implored her to return to the safety of the States amidst the brewing storm of German aggression. Despite her years of living in England, Susan's American spirit never wavers, imbuing her with a sense of pride that continues to shape her life. As the past paints a vivid tapestry in her mind, Susan's journey from a wide-eyed tourist to a distinguished member of British gentry unfolds, punctuated by whirlwind romance, enduring love, and the relentless shadows of war.
