Plot

Caught in the vibrant life of Manhattan, Taiwanese-American Wai-Tung weaves a delicate dance between tradition and modernity. He lovingly manages an aging, character-filled apartment building, a venture funded by his tradition-steeped parents who reside in Taiwan. While he holds deep affection for his parents, they become an unexpected source of turmoil as they persistently seek a customary Chinese bride to carry on their family lineage. The weight of this task sits heavily on Wai-Tung, as he harbors a secret life - he's deeply committed to a loving relationship with Simon, a Caucasian physical therapist. As the pressure from his parents begins to strain Wai-Tung's relationship with Simon, a clever plan blooms. Simon suggests a marriage of convenience for Wai-Tung with Wei-Wei, a struggling Shanghai-born artist and tenant of their Manhattan building. This arrangement would not only shield Wai-Tung's secret and halt his parents' interfering matchmaking, but it would also secure Wei-Wei's green card, saving her from imminent return to China. With Wei-Wei aware of Wai-Tung and Simon's relationship, she agrees to the plan. Believing they would be safe from the traditional wedding spectacle, as Wai-Tung's father recently suffered a heart attack, they are taken aback when Wai-Tung's parents decide to travel to Manhattan to oversee the nuptials. Their arrival forces Wai-Tung and Wei-Wei into a grand Chinese wedding banquet that they desperately hoped to avoid. Now, under the watchful eyes of their families and the immigration service, Wai-Tung, Simon, and Wei-Wei must navigate through a labyrinth of complications and pretenses, hoping their plan can endure the scrutiny. As the banquet unfolds, it becomes a test of love, loyalty, and the lengths one goes to for family acceptance in this heartwarming tale of culture, identity, and unconventional alliances.
